Lunch and Learn with Lindsay – Issue 140 : All Change Please!

🐇💥Today I’m wishing you “Kung Hey Fat Choy” as we commence the Chinese New Year 2023 – Year of the Rabbit.

Chinese culture has a special place in my heart as I grew up in Hong Kong. I have oriental object d’art around my home (I love interior design!) and one of my favourite perfumes is Shanghai Tang‘s Jasmine scent…I’m also incredibly excited to be heading back to Hong Kong in March for a 50th birthday treat!

Having lived and worked overseas including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, France and the USA, I believe this contributes to my appreciation and understanding of cultural differences.

In 1994 when Malcolm Taylor and I were offered a secondment to Chicago in the US from the UK, we were invited to attend a week’s cultural training. Naively I remember frowning and wondering why this training would be necessary – there wasn’t going to be a language barrier, just a few differences in spellings with “zees” or “zeds” replacing our British “esses”😜!! But – 💥goodness💥 This training was an eye-opener and I learned much about the difference in working styles between the UK and the US and also what likely emotions we would experience when we left “home” for patures new and changed our whole lifestyle!

On the subject of change, I love that saying “change is the only constant”. I had the pleasure to share a session entitled “All Change Please” with a corporate client last week who are in the throes of a department restructure.

I knew how beneficial it would be to the team to understand there’s a pattern to human response, emotions and feelings during times of change and that we can employ strategies to support ourselves and others through change.

Remember

✅Life would be boring without a CHALLENGE. It can be easy to relax into “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got” but this inhibits learning and development and you will miss opportunities that become available to you…

✅”CHA lle NGE” can’t be spelled without the word “CHANGE”

Here’s to a happy, healthy and prosperous Year of the Rabbit for you all with my best wishes.
