Lunch and Learn with Lindsay – Issue 143 : Kintsugi

I am tapping this message out from my hotel room in Tokyo where Malcolm and I are enjoying a cultural extravaganza for a week’s break.

You probably know that I LOVE travelling.  With international exploration having been on pause for a few years due to a certain pandemic, I’m now definitely making up for lost time!  There are so many places in the world I want to visit and “check off” on my travel wishlist.

I really LOVE the saying that “every person you meet knows something you don’t”.

With so many cultural differences here in Japan, I’m intrigued to talk to the people I meet here.  What do they know that I don’t (there’s a lot!)? What will spark my interest and feed my curiousity and learning?

One thing I have learned since being here is more about the art of “Kintsugi” (or “golden joinery” by translation),

This is the Japanese art of repainting broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum, so highlighting the cracks as part of the life and beauty of the object.

Kintsugi showcases the “flaws” and “imperfections” instead of hiding them.

Isn’t that gorgeous?

We’re all a bit chipped around the edges as we go through life. That’s what makes us beautiful and who we are…#foodforthought
