Today’s Issue is inspired by my National Days Calendar and a notification that it is Superman Day. I am reminded of one of my favourite TED Talks from American social psychologist, author and speaker Amy Cuddy.
Cuddy introduces us to “power posing” or getting your body into a superhero pose as a way of inducing confidence and a feeling of power. Whilst the scientific validity of her technique has been questioned, I think it’s a really interesting concept. Her technique is one I’ve used in training sessions, firstly getting a group of learners to walk around the room with drooped shoulders and “low” body posture then inviting them to pose as a superhero, feel the “power” and then walk around the room again. The difference in energy and positivity is quite something!
