We love an acronym here at Your Excellency. You only have to scroll through our Blog page to find evidence of this (IDEAL, IMPACT, KISS and THINK).
Acronyms (an abbreviation formed from the intial letters of other words and pronounced as a word) are a fantastic way to anchor in learning. And, of course, they add that fun, creative element that we favour here at your Excellency too!
As I type this, I’m having flashbacks to Josh teaching Lottie about MRSNERG (used to explain the seven characteristics of living things – Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Nutrition, Excretion, Reproduction and Growth) when she was revising for GCSE Biology! Living in America (Malcolm and I lived and worked in Chicago in the 90s), I remember learning the Great Lakes as HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior).
And what about mnemonics too? (where you put things in a sentence to help you recall them better)?
The planets in the Solar System in order are My (Mercury) Very (Venus) Easy (Earth) Method (Mars) Just (Jupiter) Speeds (Saturn) Up (Uranus) Nothing (Neptune). 🌍
The points on the compass I learned as Naughty (North) Elephants (East) Squirt (South) Water (West)! 🐘 And Richard (Red) Of (Orange) York (Yellow) Gave (Green) Battle (Blue) In (Indigo) Vain (Violet) is one of my all-time favourites 🌈
