Welcome to Issue 169 of 🍏Lunch N Learn with Lindsay🍏. In this issue, I’m honing in on Sensory Awareness which is the “Neuro” element of Neuro Linguistic Programme and one of the Pillars of NLP. We are sensory creatures and “make sense” of our world through our 5 senses. With all 5 senses working, we see, hear, feel (touch and emotions), taste and smell our way through life, creating our own “map of the world”. But, actually how aware are you really? Take a watch of this video which was issued by Transport for London many years ago to raise awareness of cyclists. It’s an amusing yet hard-hitting watch that answers the question “How aware are YOU?” and a “wake-up” call for us all. Did you know that at any one moment in time, there are 11 million bits of information that we could potentially process. However, human make-up is such that this is not possible (think “information-overload” or “melt-down” if it were!). Instead, we have “filters” in place that delete, generalise and distort information so that we can more manageably process what’s going on. At any one moment in time, we are left with 7 plus or minus 2 bits of information that we will consciously process. Our filters include Representation Systems, our patterns of thinking, beliefs and values, culture, experience & learning and physiology & state. With these filters in place, one person’s perception of reality will be different to anothers. It’s fascinating that you will be processing 7 plus or minus 2 bits of information that could be entirely different to your work colleague or partner, or to me. We’re all made up differently. I always say, it’s what makes the world so exciting and it’s what makes the world so challenging too! |
