Welcome to 🍏Lunch N Learn with Lindsay🍏 Issue 195, after a missed Monday and “break in proceedings” due to the Easter weekend. This week I’m continuing to share learning with you expanding on the Lunch n Learn LIVE Session “Leadership Level up for EAs and PAs” (don’t worry if you missed this Session – you can purchase the recording here). Remind yourself of Bennis’s characteristics of a leader introduced here in Issue 194. Today we are highlighting that leaders take “a long term perspective” as opposed to a “short range view”. This “long term perspective” has benefits galore. Firstly, a “long term perspective” is crucial when it comes to “delegation” (defined in the visual below). One of the reasons people DON’T delegate is because they worry about the time it will take to get the delegatee up to speed with the skills necessary to successfully complete a task. This is a short range view. As an effective leader, we should always be thinking long-term and understand that the investment in time and energy NOW will reap benefits in the FUTURE and long-term, particularly, of course, if it’s a recurring task. This is also true of investment in your learning. It frustrates me when clients claim they “don’t have time” to attend a day’s workshop or a 60-minute lunch time session. They aren’t thinking long term, like an effective leader, about the great skills that will be gained and the positive impact this will have in the long term. Another example where a “long term perspective” is important is when we are in a challenging situation. It can be easy to get embroiled in the “here and now” without thinking to the future and what can be learned from the situation. Remember those “lenses” introduced by Schwartz & McCarthy when “Managing your Energy”? What other examples can you think of where taking a “long term perspective” is beneficial? |
