Lunch and Learn with Lindsay – Issue 223: Towards – Away From : Meta Programme

Welcome to 🍏Lunch n Learn with Lindsay🍏 Issue 223.

Today you’ll find me wearing my “Programme designer” hat.  A long-standing corporate client has asked for a training course to support their Professional Business Support Community with an awareness of different behaviours and patterns of thinking.  This is with the main learning outcome of creating better rapport and working relationships with the Senior Leaders and team members they support.  I’m drawing on my knowledge of Meta Programmes for this training.  Meta Programmes are your sub conscious filters that reveal your patterns of behaviour through your language. By understanding your own Meta Programmes and those of your team members you will better be able to create rapport by “speaking their language”.  This in addition to other techniques such as matching (Verbal, Vocal and Visual communication) will help you influence situations in order to meet your outcomes.

Being adaptable and flexible in your language (Verbal, Vocal and Visual), behaviours and thinking is the key to creating the very best rapport and working relationships with others.

Over the next few weeks, I am going to introduce you to the different Meta Programmes.  Think of them as sitting on a behaviour line.

Where do you “sit” on the behaviour line?  Where does your Executive or team member “sit”?  What are the similarities in your behaviour?  What are the differences?  How can you adapt your language to create better rapport and ensure the very best working relationship?

Remember, flexibility with your thinking, behaviours and language is key.  “People like people who are like themselves”.

Let’s kick-off with the Towards V Away From Meta Programme.

If you have a Towards Meta Programme, you will move positively  towards an identified goal or outcome identifying what you do want and what you will do.  The language you use will include :  get, gain, attain, achieve, towards, embrace….and you’re likely to be nodding your head with positivity.  As an analogy with the Winnie the Pooh books by A A Milne, think about Tigger, the bouncy, energetic tiger!  You will be brilliant at adding motivation, positivity and energy to your goal setting.

If you have an Away From Meta Programme you will be great at identifying what you don’t want and will highlight the things that aren’t required.  The language you use will include : don’t, can’t, problems, risks, barriers, leave, get rid of, eliminate, pitfalls…and you’re likely to be shaking you head with negativity.  As an analogy with a Milne’s character, think Eeyore!  You will be brilliant at writing risk assessments.

Let’s take an example of booking a holiday (because this is one of my favourite things to do!) to highlight how your Meta Programme and behaviour pattern will influence your decision making :

Q: Why are you booking a holiday?

A: Away From : Because I need to get away from work!

A: Towards : Because I want to go to new places to get more experience of the culture and people!

Where do you sit on the Meta Programme / behaviour line? Where does your Executive or team member sit?  How will you adapt your language to enhance your working relationship?

As ever,  I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s read and learning and I wish you all the best for the week ahead.
