2022 looms! And I just love a new year and all the “unknowns” that are around the corner!
When Big Ben chimes, the ball dops in Times Square and the fireworks explode, I always feel a tingle of excitement at new possibilities and opportunities galore. A new year for me is a starting point for putting into practice all my great plans with a fresh mindset and renewed vigour.
Here at Your Excellency I’m in the throes of setting my personal goals for 2022 and also formulating Your Excellency’s strategy and goals with Malcolm and Joshua.
I use SMART(ER), as I’m sure many of you do, to add that robustness to the things I want to achieve. You can read more about this theory here.
I also use a lesser known model attributed to Dr Edwin Locke and Dr Gary Latham.
Locke and Latham spent years researching goal setting theory and identified five criteria that need to be in place for us to achieve our goals. These five criteria emphasise motivation as a crucial element of goal setting theory.

For each of these criteria, we can ask the following questions to ensure we’re adding motivation to our goals. Using Locke and Latham’s Goal Setting Theory you will ensure you’re on track to succesfully achieving all the exciting things you want to achieve in 2022 – give it a go!
Clarity
Is the goal clearly defined and do I know exactly what has to be achieved?
Do I know how this fits with my role and links with what the business wants to achieve?
Challenge
Is this a positive challenge for me?
Commitment
Am I committed to achieving it and do I know “what is in it for me”?
Feedback
Will I get feedback and support on progress towards the goal?
Task complexity
Is the goal within my skillsets? Will I get training and support for new areas and skill development? Is it giving me the right balance between stretching my capabilities and not getting bored or finding it too easy?
