Welcome to 🍏Lunch N Learn with Lindsay🍏 Issue 199. I took a day out of the office on Friday and headed into London with Malcolm and some friends to visit eight of the Capital’s oldest pubs. It was a super day out made even more glorious because of the sunshine! Our first pub stop was The Prospect of Whitby, built in 1520 and one the oldest riverside taverns. Famed for its rare pewter-topped bar, the pub was notorious for smugglers, thieves and pirates. There’s rather a unique view from the beer garden too – a noose and gallows! Whilst sipping my Pims and lemonade in the glorious sunshine, I contemplated a time where public hangings were an integral part of life…and my mind went off at a tangent thinking of other practices that were no longer acceptable. I remember as a child long car journeys where I would be kneeling on the back seat and playing a game with my brother and sister on how many other drivers would wave back to us…quite shockingly no seat belt were featured in my (absolutely correct 1970s) recollection. I remember a 16 hour flight to Hong Kong in 1989 heading to a new (amazing!) home – where smoking on the plane was permitted, as long as you were in a designated smoking area. As EAs and PAs we see, hear and experience what’s happening at our organisations from a unique position. It is imperative that we call out and highlight practices and instances where something isn’t “right” or “fair”. We should also be on a constant mission to consider how things are being done and whether there is a better, more effective or efficient way. This week think about your processes, your procedures, the way “things are done” at your organisation. Ask “is this really the best way?”. And if it’s not “what would make it better? The best?” |
